Turkish Imam Fethullah Gülen Hocaefendi, Who Led 2016 Coup, Dies In PA: Officials

A Turkish Imam and political leader who was living in self-imposed-exile in the United States died at his compound in the Poconos, officials told Daily Voice.

"Fethullah Gülen Hocaefendi has passed away, having succumbed to a heart condition from which he had been suffering for a long time," his nephew, Kemal Gülen, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter on Friday, Oct. 18. "I am so deeply saddened by this great loss that I cannot accept condolences. May his position be high... ."

He passed away in the Saylorsburg area of the Poconos, the Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac told us.

The former businessman and leader of the Gülen movement or Hizmet hareketi, lead failed a coup d'état in 2016 which injured over 2,200 and killed an estimated 251 people.

After the deadly failed coup, Gülen spent the last 8 years of his life in a gated compound in the Pocono Mountains.  

He continued to wield influence among his millions of followers in Turkey and throughout the world.
